HISTORY OF THE NEWBERRY COUNTY FAMILY  YMCA

Home

The Newberry YMCA was formed as a result of a project of the Newberry Rotary Club who secured the initial startup money through commitments from the leading industry within the county.  The Y received its charter in October of 1985 and hired Pat Newman as its first Executive Director and maintained an office in the bottom of community hall.  The YMCA moved from the office space to Lominack's hardware store after completing renovations in May 1986.  Pat Newman resigned his position in December of 1990 to accept a position at the New Bern YMCA in North Carolina.  Jerry Coffey was hired to replace Pat in January of 1991.  A capital campaign began in February of 1991 to construct an outdoor pool and bath houses.  Construction began later in the spring and the pool was opened June of 1992. A second capital campaign was begun in the fall of 1998 to build the present YMCA facility. Construction began in April of 1999 and the facility opened in January 2000.
